What Does a Typical Day at Nursery Look Like?
Choosing a nursery is a big decision, and one of the questions parents often have is: what does a typical day at nursery look like?
While no two days are exactly the same, a familiar rhythm can help little ones feel comfortable and confident. At The Butterfly Patch, we follow children’s interests, so what happens within that routine can change from day to day.
Each of our nurseries has its own personality, spaces and approach, but here's an example of how a typical day might flow.
Arriving and settling in, 7:30am–8:30am
The day begins with a warm welcome, breakfast if needed — typically Weetabix, Corn Flakes or Rice Krispies — and time to settle into indoor or outdoor play.
Parents can also share anything helpful with the team about how their little one is feeling that day.
Morning exploration, 9:00am onwards
After circle time, little ones enjoy a mixture of planned experiences, free play and outdoor exploration.
We follow their interests, whether that's dinosaurs, a recent family holiday or something they've discovered. Morning snack is also part of the routine and might include fruit, crackers or breadsticks.
Lunch and a little reset, 11:15am–12:30pm
After some time to tidy up together, it's time for lunch. See our menu below!
Depending on their age and individual needs, the time after lunch might include a nap, story or quieter activities.
Afternoon adventures, 1:00pm–3:00pm
The afternoon brings more opportunities for play, planned experiences and outdoor exploration.
Little ones might continue something they started in the morning or discover something completely new, with practitioners following their interests and supporting their individual development.
Stories, tea and winding down, 3:00pm–4:30pm
After another tidy-up and circle time, it's time for tea. We serve a smaller meal, such as finger sandwiches, so there's still room for dinner at home.
Stories and quieter activities then give little ones a chance to wind down and enjoy some calm time together.
Home time, from 4:30pm onwards
Little ones can continue with indoor or outdoor free play while families begin to arrive.
Practitioners can share highlights from the day, from something they particularly enjoyed to a new skill they explored.
Food, Mealtimes & Independence
Mealtimes and snacks are about more than just food. Little ones sit together, giving them time to chat, share experiences and develop their independence while enjoying their meals.
Our food provision varies between nurseries. Some settings prepare fresh vegetarian and pescatarian meals from scratch, while others currently use meals provided by Zebedees, with plans to move towards scratch-made food in the near future.

Fresh drinking water is available throughout the day, with little ones encouraged to help themselves whenever they need it.

Every Nursery Day Is Different
There isn't one identical timetable across The Butterfly Patch.
Our routines provide familiarity and security, but the experiences within them are shaped by the little ones themselves.
A family trip, a favourite book, a fascination with giraffes or something discovered in the garden can all become the starting point for learning.
Our practitioners get to know each little one as an individual and use their interests, development and observations to shape their experiences.
